Eleven refugees attended an MDA First Aid/Lifesaving Course prior to returning to homes in South Sudan.

Supported by the Israeli Foreign Ministry, the 10-day course was held at the MDA station in Eilat and taught in Arabic by MDA paramedic, Osama Abu Mukh. Its aim was to enable them to treat people and use lifesaving techniques to save lives in their homeland, where access to quality medical assistance is very sparse.

MDA Director-General, Eli Bin, said that the knowledge acquired by these Sudanese refugees would serve them well throughout their lives and would help save many others in their country. He welcomed this initiative was an excellent expression of MDA's active membership in the International Red Cross movement.

  • MDA RESPONDS TO EILAT TERRORIST ATTACKS (18/08/2011)

A well planned and coordinated four-pronged attack, that Israel's Ministry of Defense attributes to have originated from Gaza, has killed seven and wounded 31. The terrorists first open fire on Egged bus #392, en route to Eilat from Mitzpe Ramon, and then detonated roadside bombs when the IDF sent vehicles to respond. In a third attack a mortar shell, reportedly fired from Sinai, barely missed a private vehicle and in the fourth incident another bus and automobile were ambushed by small arms fire and rocket fired grenades (RPGs).

Magen David Adom reports that seven Israelis died and 31 were injured. MDA treated the victims at the scenes and raced them to Yoseftal Hospital in Eilat. The seven most severely wounded were then airlifted to Soroka Medical Center in Be’er Sheva. In the aftermath of the attacks, IDF soldiers engaged the terrorists and killed a number of them, however this evening two Israeli soldiers were gravely wounded by terrorist gunfire north of Eilat. Shortly beforehand, Israel retaliated with aircraft attacking targets in the Gaza Strip, killing at least six people, including a senior commander in the Popular Resistance Committees, Kamal Abu Abed al-Nairab. Three rockets fired at Ashkelon from Gaza were then intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system.
