SARAH UNGER
- AN MDA VOLUNTEER FROM MELBOURNE
TELLS THIS STORY ...
"Tuesday August 11th 2009: In the early hours of the morning, we received
an emergency call. We headed to a health clinic where a woman was having a
a heart attack (myocardial infarction ).
When we arrived, she was lying on a bed, complaining of severe
chest-pains and was hyperventilating.
Immediately, we gave her an oxygen mask, but she refused saying she that couldn’t
wear the mask. We then rushed her straight to the hospital where she was immediately
connected up to a defibrillator and shocked. Luckily, she survived."

"Tuesday August 18th 2009: my last shift with MDA in Be’er Sheva provided me with my greatest
experienced. We arrived at the Be’er Sheva public swimming pool at around 1:15pm and rushed through
the crowd to where a man lying beside an under-shelter pool. He was about 70 years old, unconscious,
not breathing, but with a pulse.
The lifeguard and two paramedics had been doing chest compressions for 2 minutes prior to us arriving,
but the man needed CPR. We immediately wiped down his chest, connected him to the defibrillator
and shocked him.
We then took over from the paramedics. We gave the man oxygen, helped set up an IV and cleared the
surroundings. Soon after, the man's chest started moving up and down. He was now breathing. There were
nine people, in total, helping this man to stay alive.
We rushed him to the hospital and immediately entered the emergency "shock room" where the doctors
were waiting for him. Within minutes of being connected him to an ECG, he was sitting up asking people
around him where he was. It was a truly amazing experience."
