1923–2015

Born in Hungary in 1923, Vera Clarke survived hardship and began a new life in Australia with her husband George in 1948. Together, they built a future from humble beginnings—first in trades and later with a bustling sandwich shop in Ashfield, famous for Vera’s beloved Hungarian cooking.

After selling the business, Vera worked in jewellery and embraced travel with George until his passing in 2003. Despite heartbreak, she remained fiercely independent, learning to drive and cultivating deep friendships well into her later years. At Montefiore Home, she became a cherished presence—wise, upbeat, and full of grace.

Vera will be remembered for her resilience, her warmth, and her quiet generosity.

Her remarkable final gift—a bequest to Magen David Adomfunded the Advanced Driver Safety Program at the WH Bloomberg MDA station in Jerusalem. This life-saving simulator trains ambulance drivers to navigate Israel’s most hazardous road conditions, improving emergency response and protecting lives every day.

Through this program, Vera’s legacy lives on in every life saved by the skilled hands she helped prepare.
